A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing Lauren and Nick’s Sopley Mill Winter wedding. I’ve shot lots of weddings over the years at Sopley Mill since it was reopened as a venue, but this was the first one in Winter. Cold? Yes, but thankfully no snow!
Lauren and Nick wanted to have a relaxed wedding and didn’t care what the weather threw at them. Lauren even had a pair of wellies on standby, “just in case”, but thankfully they weren’t needed!
Their day was relaxed, with only a couple of formal photos. They wanted to enjoy the day without the photography intruding on it, which is why they chose me to document it for them.
As I said, it was cold. A chill wind blowing up across the flood plain from Christchurch. The river levels were high after weeks of incessant rain. The grey, overcast sky threatened rain. Winter in Dorset.
Lauren and her Sister arrived at the Mill to put the finishing touches to her Bridal prep. The dress. The flowers. The shoes. Everything was ready.
There was lots of banter going on as Lauren, her Father and Sister walked up the lane to the Church (skilfully avoid the puddles and potholes!). The Church of St Michael and All Angels dates back to the 11th Century and sits atop a mound above Sopley village, with views out across the Avon Valley.
Nick’s Father is a Vicar and was assisting the local Vicar with the proceedings. As he waited outside for Lauren to arrive, Nick waited quietly in the Church, lost in his thoughts.
The bells rang out, the moment had arrived and the organist announced the arrival of the Bridal party.
After the ceremony everyone made their way back down to the Mill for hot mulled wine, perfect for beating the Winter chills. After the wedding breakfast and the speeches it was time for the awesome band to strike up and the partying began!
It was a great day and if you’d like to see some more images, kick off your shoes and enjoy the video …
