Profoto launch B1 – off camera flash

Last week Profoto announced the launch of their B1 model, an off camera flash with TTL.  Allowing photographers to utilise their TTL systems with a powerful 500ws flash, it looks as though it’ll be an ideal piece of equipment for wedding photographers. One thing that all photographers need is – light! Without it we’re stumped. By using flash creatively we can transform ordinary situations into something special. However, “normal” flashguns don’t always have the power we need (not even the mighty Nikon SB910). In these cases, we need something bigger and beefier! That’s where this type of unit comes into its own.

Highlights of the Profoto B1 flash:

  1. Patent pending AirTTL technology takes the concept of “point and shoot” to the next level.

  2. Exchangeable, integrated battery provides up to 220 full-power flashes per charge.

  3. Cordless design and wireless Air technology allows you to shoot without cords and restraints.

  4. Quick burst capability eliminates the risk of missing that perfect shot waiting for the flash.

  5. 500Ws adjustable in 1/10 f-stop increments over a 9 f-stop power range give you both -power and precise control.

  6. Compatible with a wide range of Profoto Light Shaping Tools.

Check out the launch video that Profoto put out … pretty impressive power for a battery-powered flash ….

The only downside is the price – Calumet are currently showing these at around £1500 per unit, so a three light set-up, plus remotes is going to be a sizeable investment. But, if your works demands powerful, rugged units then it’s something you have to consider. Studio photographers have a wide range of powerful, mains-powered units to choose from. But location photographers (wedding, fashion) have a much more limited number of options. This Profoto B1 may be what many have been looking for.
