Ice cream in Venice
A personal photograph today, one from my trip to Venice last year. As a wedding photographer, I suffer from a condition that affect many in our industry. Taking photographs for a living time means we get a little disinterested in shooting for ourselves. It’s all to easy to concentrate on delivering the best images for our clients. We can forget that our own creativity is important as well. We need time out. Time to explore. Perhaps experiment. But crucially, to relax and enjoy our photography, away from the pressures of weddings.
This photograph’s from St. Mark’s Square in Venice. I was wandering around late in the evening, taking in the sights and sounds of Venice at night. I saw this ice-cream shop, empty except for the guy behind the counter. Meanwhile, the who next door was doing a roaring trade in ice-creams! I wonder what drew people to that shop and not his. That’s what drew me to the image, the contrast between the two shops. That’s the beauty of photography – it’s not “just” about the image, it’s the story that lies behind it. It holds true for every photograph. That’s what I like to do with my wedding photography – tell the story.
