Dorset wedding photographer – colour or bw?

Dorset wedding photographer – colour or bw?” – what’s that all about I can hear you asking? 🙂

Now that I’ve got a couple of weeks break from shooting weddings I’m taking the opportunity to catch up my Blogging of weddings I’ve photographed this season, so keep a watch on the Blog. Yesterday I felt like spending a bit of time editing a few favourite images from my recent trip to Venice. In case you’re not aware, at the end of September I spent a week in Italy on a wedding masterclass with one of the world’s top photographers – Yervant. It was great fun, and really useful to meet and exchange ideas with other professionals from around the world. Anyway, whilst working on this image I wondered what it would look like in Black and White. Now, to me, Black and White’s an extremely powerful way to display an image. Stripping away the Colour brings the viewer’s focus back to the subject – there are no distractions. Images can be much stronger. This particular shot of our model on the balcony looks gorgeous in colour, it just oozes warmth. For me, the Black and White version also works well, focusing the eye on the components of the image. So, as a test, I posted it to my Facebook page and asked which version my viewers liked. It was pretty unanimous … colour. A couple of people liked the Black and White version, but not as much as they liked the Colour! Someone even suggested that I leave the model in Colour and then converted the rest to Black and White! Sorry, but “spot colouring” as we refer to it isn’t my style!

It would have been interesting to post the Black and White version on its own to see how much people liked it, without anything to compare it to. Perhaps that would have given a different result – who knows. What I do know is that I still love Black and White, and it’ll continue to be a part of the style of wedding photography that I shoot.
