Boy and dog – behind the image
Although I’m primarily a wedding photographer, I also undertake a limited amount of family portraiture. Not for me some stuffy studio! I like to photograph my clients in their own environments. Sometimes I’ll spend a whole day with them. Documenting their story.
I love this image that I took a couple of years ago. Still one of my all-time favourites. Here’s the story behind “Boy and Dog” ….
I’d been asked to take some photographs of this little chap at home. His Mum duly laid out his favourite toys so we could get some shots in the house. But he wanted to be outside. That was “his” space. So, out we went.
He had a great time, running around and having fun. That’s what children are supposed to do, aren’t they?
Anyway, the dog next door had been left on his own in the garden. A couple of times he poked his nose under the fence panel to see what was going on. Probably wanted to join in! The boy saw this and went over, but every time he got there the dog moved away. But just as we were about to finish up, the boy went across and sat down, gazing at the gap under the fence. Just then, the dog appeared. For a moment he stayed there, the little boy transfixed. This is the result.
Something you can’t stage – it just happens. A spontaneous moment captured for posterity.
