    Supermoon

by Ian Hamilton This weekend saw the “Supermoon” ….. it appeared 14% larger and 30% brighter than normal. Why, well it happens when there’s a new Moon (or full Moon) that occurs when the Moon’s either at or near its closest approach to the Earth. It looks bigger when it’s on the horizon next to trees or buildings. It should be also around tonight as well (and the forecast is for a clear evening) so if you missed it you’ve another chance! There’s another, even more spectacular

Focus on Imaging – the end

by Ian Hamilton Focus on Imaging is no more … Yesterday saw a Press Release about the demise of Focus on Imaging, arguably the largest photographic trade show in the UK. Running for 24 years and with more than half a million photographers through its doors it was a showcase for photographic companies and one where professional (and amateur) photographers could see the latest innovations and releases from the major manufacturers. Over the past few years the explosion in digita

Sir Norman Parkinson honoured by Google

by Ian Hamilton Sir Norman Parkinson honoured by Google at 100 100 years ago today, the celebrated fashion and portrait photographer, Sir Norman Parkinson, was born. He died in 1990 but his work is still highly regarded and indeed, there’s an exhibition of his work at the National Theatre in London and another in Bath. Norman Parkinson was once described by Jerry Hall as “an old-style gentleman photographer”. In the words of Jonathan Jones in The Guardian “Parkinson’s brillia

    The real value of photographs

by Ian Hamilton The real value of photographs is their lasting legacy I’ve posted before about the true value of photographs, capturing the most special moments in our lives, but it’s also true that they can capture the most emotional and hear-wrenching moments as well. Here’s a link to a husband’s poignant tribute to his wife who lost her battle against cancer. Not only has he told the story, but he’s documented her battle with photographs …. I urge you to look at his websit

Dorset wedding photographer – portfolio images

by Ian Hamilton Dorset wedding photographer – portfolio images As we head into Winter I’ll be showcasing some of my images from this year’s weddings in Bournemouth and across Dorset. One of the most important things (in my mind anyway) for a wedding photographer to capture is the emotion during the wedding. So many wedding photographers these days seem to concentrate on detail shots (such as the table settings, flowers etc.) or go for a stylized approach and take photographs

Mallorca wedding photography – Danielle and Mike sneak peek

by Ian Hamilton Mallorca wedding photography – Danielle and Mike, Portal Nous I was delighted last year when Danielle and Mike asked if I’d be prepared to shoot their wedding on the lovely island of Mallorca … no prizes for guessing what my response was! 🙂 Here are just a few sneak peeks from last week’s wedding in the gorgeous cliff-top church at Portal Nous, overlooking the Bay of Palma. The weather, as you can see, what fabulous – a bit hotter than when I left Bournemouth

Best job in the world? Dorset and Hampshire wedding photographer

by Ian Hamilton Who has the best job in the world? Why, a wedding photographer of course! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again …. being a wedding photographer‘s possibly the best job in the world (well, for me it is anyway!). Why? Because a couple’s wedding day is probably the most important day in their lives, and I get to share it – more than that even … I get to be a part of it, a really crucial part, capturing images that will bring back memories of that special day.

New Forest wedding, one year on – Lou and Rich – Hampshire wedding photography

by Ian Hamilton Happy 1st wedding anniversary to Louise and Richard Seems hard to believe that a year’s passed since Lou and Rich’s wedding in Brockenhurst in Hampshire – in the middle of the beautiful New Forest. It’a always a privilege to photograph a couple’s wedding, and Lou and Rich put on a fabulous wedding with a reception just outside Lymington – thankfully we had fine weather, unlike this Summer! Thank you both for letting me be a part of your special day, and I wish

Wedding anniversary celebrations – Highcliffe Castle wedding photographer

by Ian Hamilton Happy 2nd wedding anniversary to Esther and Jon At 3:30pm on this day in 2010, Esther and Jon were married at the lovely wedding venue of Highcliffe Castle in Dorset. The day started grey and overcast, but we were hopeful things would improve – I started shooting with the girls at a hair salon in Christchurch before moving onto the hotel where they’d stayed overnight. Luckily this was just around the corner from Highcliffe Castle, which was just as well, becau

Brands Hatch photo-shoot … Dorset commercial photographer

by Ian Hamilton Charity photo-shoot at Brands Hatch I was delighted to be able to help out on a charity event last week – shooting stills on a music video being produced in aid of Pop 4 Diabetes … it’s a non-profit organisation raising funds for continuing research into finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes, which affects more than 10-15% of the 2.9 million people in the UK alone who suffer from Diabetes.  The video was shot by Mike and Julie from Cracking Media in Poole and I w

Hampshire wedding photographer – the Brockenhurst wedding of Niki and Duncan

by Ian Hamilton Hampshire wedding photographer – the wedding of Niki and Duncan in Brockenhurst .. the heart of the New Forest I was delighted to be asked to photograph Nikki and Duncan’s wedding in the New Forest, especially as I’d photographed her Sister’s wedding at the same church last year. We’d met up a couple of times before the wedding, and the last occasion was to shoot their engagement photographs at Hordle in Hampshire …. the spot where Duncan proposed (check here

First wedding anniversary – Dorset wedding of Clare and Michael

by Ian Hamilton Dorset wedding photography at The Italian Villa, Compton Acres – first anniversary congratulations On this beautiful Summer’s morning it’s congratulations to Clare and Michael Craig on their first wedding anniversary! Clare and Michael were married at the Church of the Sacred Heart on Richmond Hill in Bournemouth and held their reception at The Italian Villa at Compton Acres in Poole. As the couple live in Surrey I’d suggested that a wedding planner might be b

It's camera shake Captain, but not as we know it!

OK, apologies for the very poor take-off of Star Trek for any fans out there, but one of the biggest problems faced by photographers (be they professional or amateur) is camera shake – simply put, there are times when the shutter speeds are so low that the human body simply can’t hold the camera still, and the result is blurry photographs. There are a couple of options available – to increase the ISO or adjust the exposure settings, to use a tripod to keep the camera rock-ste
