Bournemouth wedding photographer – image of the week 32

An image from yet another of my gorgeous weddings (well, all weddings are gorgeous, aren’t they?), featuring Amy and Kevin on their special day at Beach Weddings Bournemouth – my choice for this week’s selection – “Bournemouth wedding photographer – image of the week 32″.

As I’ve said before (and I apologise if you’ve seen it before, but it’s true!), one of the key elements of wedding photography is capturing the emotions on the day. It’s the ability to “read” the room, to understand who the people are and their connections to one another. To watch, to listen and, very importantly …. to anticipate. That’s the skill of the wedding photo-journalist … to capture the day without intruding, letting events take their course. Naturally there’s the odd occasion where I have to direct things a little, such as for the family formals, but for the majority of the time it’s a case of being the silent observer. Lots of people who call themselves photographers claim to take natural photos, but unfortunately these can often turn out to be just snapshots – something that a relative might have taken. Being a wedding photo-journalist is so, so different and it’s not something that comes easily – it’s developed over years of hard work.

Anyway, back to the image. Before the ceremony got underway I watched the interactions between the family members and the guests. Kevin seemed very relaxed about the whole thing, but just before Amy arrived I noticed a small tear in his eye – you know the look ladies, when the eyes glisten and you’re trying to make out everything’s OK! As Amy walked down the aisle with her Father I could see that Kevin was getting quite emotional. Then, as she arrived at the decking and turned to him it was just too much ….. the hankie had to come out!

It’s a lovely shot, and it’s nice to see emotions from Grooms and not just Brides. After all, getting married is a huge commitment and marks the start of your new life together – so who wouldn’t get emotional? 🙂
